Want to grow your Facebook following? Make followers lol like the laughing so hard I’m crying emoji. Want to join the conversations on Twitter? Stop posting last year’s ad-vomit BOGO sale and make them laugh!
Social media has turned into THE outlet for brands to hunt down their target markets with ease, but definitely not grace. We all have come across the dating website ad after reluctantly changing a relationship status to single. We all have seen that sponsored post when you abandon a shopping cart of shoes at 2 a.m. and thought, “Isn’t this supposed to be a social network, not a marketing platform?”
However, the social media world didn’t mind Oreo’s clever “You Can Still Dunk in the Dark” tweet during the Super Bowl power outage or the hilarious JC Penny “Texting with Mittens” campaign. Social posts like these make us laugh so we love, like and share them! We even text our friends memes of Kim Kardashian’s backside as Krispy Kreme donuts without thinking twice (guilty as charged).
We show no shame in posting embarrassing photos of our pets dressed in costumes or retweeting photos of our furry friends with their heads stuck in bread. But for goodness-sake if we see another dry sales-pitch-advertisement in our Facebook feed we might punch our computers and read a magazine for once.
We have 140 characters on Twitter and optimal Facebook posts are even shorter than that. So you’ve got one shot to capture a giggle with a short message and be able to tie that happy moment to our brand. If not, we’ll be just another scoop of vanilla in a bowl full of boring. Good luck and may the odds be ever in your flavor.
